Cultural Fluency: the brand-building language of the future

Brands and marketers are waking up to a new reality: the old playbook isn’t working for a complex, fragmenting landscape.
Brands are struggling to understand, attract, and retain audiences.
Share of attention is harder than ever to achieve when reach is no longer enough.
Marketing budgets are flooding into social and creator channels trying to connect to culture.
Today, the landscape is more complex. You must navigate micro-cultures and sub-communities across fragmented channels. Your audiences are sophisticated, cynical, and equipped with infinite skip buttons. They see through traditional marketing. But they’re hungry for culture – for content that feels authentic, meaningful, and alive.
Understanding culture isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s one of the few ways left to truly connect with people.
The standard narrative around culture is that it is messy and incomprehensible. But our perspective is different. We know that with the right tools and frameworks, culture can be understood, navigated and influenced.
We can make sense of what appears to be messy by understanding the deeper, often hidden patterns that shape what people think, feel and do. That’s not to say it’s easy, but revealing the patterns driving cultural change and the ‘why’ behind consumer behaviour is a critical, often missing lens.
Understanding culture as a living ecosystem of meaning and behaviour requires a new capability. A new brand-building language of the future. We call it Cultural Fluency.
Cultural Fluency is your ability to move through culture and shape with influence and impact.
It means seeing culture as a language that is rooted, yet always evolving. It means being fluent in reading the patterns in the signs, symbols, and meanings. Ultimately, it means you can speak and create a culture that resonates and connects people.
You understand deeply. You react with impact. You can shape what’s next.
We’ve distilled 25 years of cultural expertise into a Cultural Fluency Framework with six catalysts for growth:
- Revealing Patterns: Understanding the deeper patterns influencing your cultural space
- Anticipating Change: Understanding trajectories of cultural change to build more future-resilient strategies
- Translating Meaning: Adapting to local markets, regions and subcultures in culturally relevant, sensitive ways
- Resonating with Community: Authentically building, engaging and participating with sub-cultures and micro-communities
- Cultural Influence: Influencing culture through what is meaningful to your brand and audiences
- Embodying Creative Expression: Expressing ideas that move people
Each catalyst has a set of criteria and methodologies to evaluate how culturally fluent your brand is, where the gaps are, and what you can do.
Beyond the framework, we’re developing a Cultural Fluency Index that evaluates brands against Key Value Indicators across the six catalysts. Evaluating with a cultural lens closes a critical gap to understanding the why and how a brand succeeds or doesn’t.
We’ll show you how your brands perform against key competitors, identify the key catalysts preventing cultural fluency, and strategic recommendations.
If you’d like a complementary diagnostic analysis for your brand, send us a message.
Brands that become fluent in culture won’t just survive this shift; they’ll be the ones to thrive.
If you’d like to explore Cultural Fluency in more depth, we’re hosting a webinar on 16 April where we’ll take you through the framework and the six catalysts. You can sign up here.
